Care Heroes 2025 winner profile
Across the UK, care homes thrive thanks to the dedication of remarkable individuals who pour their energy, compassion and creativity into making a real difference. The Ontex Care Heroes Award was created to recognise those who go beyond routine care – people who bring warmth, connection and a deep sense of humanity to their work.
These are the team members who transform daily life for residents, whether it’s by learning new skills to enhance communication, designing calming outdoor spaces, or simply showing up every day with a smile and a kind word. Their actions, big and small, leave lasting impressions
“We’re incredibly proud to sponsor the Care Heroes Award once again,” said Ontex marketing manager Michelle Garvey. “With so many heartfelt and deserving nominations, choosing the winners was no easy task. Each one represents the very best of the care sector –individuals who consistently go above and beyond, not for recognition, but out of genuine compassion. It’s truly special to see them honoured by those who witness their dedication every day – whether colleagues, residents or family members.”
At this year's Care Management Show, held at the NEC in Birmingham, the winners were invited on stage to receive well-deserved recognition. Among them were three impressive runners-up and one outstanding overall winner, each having made a powerful difference to the wellbeing of those they support.
The judging panel faced the most competitive field of nominations yet, reflecting just how many care professionals are quietly transforming lives across the country. Every nomination told a story of dedication, empathy and commitment.
To acknowledge their achievements, each Care Hero received a certificate and Love2Shop voucher – £250 for the runners-up and £500 for the winner – offering a heartfelt thank you for their extraordinary efforts in making care homes feel like home.
The overall winner is Gabriela Vasile, clinical nurse manager at Care UK’s Ridley Manor in Lane End, Buckinghamshire.
Here’s what Gabriela’s colleague had to say about her admirable dedication to the role: Gabriela ‘Gabby’ Vasil’s approach is an effective combination of an encyclopaedic knowledge of elderly care and compassionate leadership.
“Gabby gets to know everyone as an individual and their family on arrival. In this way she can ensure that not only is a resident’s care plan truly person-centred, so too is every aspect of their life at Ridley Manor – from past life experiences, hobbies and interests, to favourite foods. By sharing this information with colleagues and communicating with residents regarding changes in preference, Gabby sees that individual needs are satisfied by every member of the team, clinical and otherwise.
“Two years ago, a resident nearing the end of his life arrived at Ridley Manor. Gabby assessed him and felt that with person-centred care he could be gently moved from the end-of-life pathway. As a result, she worked tirelessly to guide the whole home team to supporting him.
“With her leadership they encouraged his mobility, carefully managed his diet and gradually improved his posture. Thanks to Gabby’s efforts, the resident not only continues to live at Ridley Manor, but he is thriving. He smiles, engages in conversations with the team and family, and shares meaningful moments with his sister who visits regularly.
“Gabby has secured an oral hygienist to provide regular oral and dental care for residents. She has introduced an NHS optician and audiologist to improve sight and sound for residents. Benefits include a reduction in falls and the use of antipsychotic medication to manage challenging behaviour (often exacerbated by poor sight and hearing) as well as an overall improvement in communication between residents and those around them.
“She has implemented trackers for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation to ensure they are kept up to date, that all critical guidelines are followed, and that best practice is implemented and improved upon.”
