Guide: The leading care organisations you need to know
Find out the key differences between some leading organisations and associations within the UK care sector, including National Care Association, Care England and more.

National Care Association

National Care Association is an independent membership organisation, representing small and medium sized care providers and affiliated local associations.

Their primary aims are to: lobby Government to benefit members and the people they support; promote and develop the highest standards of care; support members and local associations with information, advice and guidance; represent all care providers at local and national level in response to government consultations and on appointed local and national government bodies.

Nadra Ahmed CBE and Ian Turner OBE are co-chairs of the National Care Association.

Care England

Care England is a registered charity and representative body for small, medium and large care providers in England.

Their priority is to support members in addressing the systemic challenges faced by the care sector, including challenges related to funding, workforce, regulation, digital transformation and integration. They seek to enable care providers to consistently deliver exceptional services while ensuring value for money and empowering those in need of care.

Professor Martin Green OBE is the chief executive of Care England.

The Care Workers’ Charity

The Care Workers’ Charity was founded in 2009 with the objective of supporting current and former care workers with one-off crisis grants.

Their mission is to advance the financial, professional and mental wellbeing of social care workers by making grants, signposting to resources and providing access to services. In 2023, they awarded a total of 2820 grants, including crisis grants, counselling packages and mental health first aider training.

Karolina Gerlich is chief executive of The Care Workers’ Charity.

National Care Forum

National Care Forum is a membership organisation for chief executives and senior directors of not-for-profits in the care and support sector.

Their activities are designed to assist members in keeping up-to-date with developments in the care sector and to promote improvements in the quality of services.

Professor Vic Rayner OBE is the chief executive of National Care Forum.

UK Homecare Association

UK Homecare Association is the UK’s membership body dedicated to supporting homecare providers.

They aim to ensure that homecare is valued so that everyone can live well at home and flourish within their communities. Their work to represent and support homecare focuses on five key priority areas: workforce; financial sustainability; quality, innovation and best practice; regulation; public understanding and perception.

Dr Jane Townson OBE is the chief executive of UK Homecare Association.

National Association of Care and Support Workers

The National Association of Care and Support Workers (NACAS) is an independent professional body for care workers.

They advocate and offer a platform for care and support workers to have a voice in the sector and to promote the recognition and value of their work. They provide a range of resources and opportunities for members, including access to best practice guidelines and training courses.

Paul Featherstone is the founder of NACAS and Liz Blacklock is the chief executive.

The Institute of Health and Social Care Management

The Institute of Health and Social Care Management (IHSCM) is an independent membership organisation for leaders and managers working in health and social care.

Their aim is to support and encourage the development of their members. They provide accredited leadership training, resources and practical guidance for health and social care leaders and managers to support them in their role.

Jon Wilks is chief executive of the Institute of Health and Social Care Management.
